Qarlbo Energy is expanding its commitment to the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors by investing in Braathens Renavia—a Swedish project development company focused on producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The company, founded by Per G. Braathen, is currently developing two large-scale projects in Sweden with the aim of producing SAF from gasified waste, biomass, and fossil-free hydrogen.
The investment reflects Qarlbo Energy’s long-term strategy: to drive systemic transformation through breakthrough technologies that can scale. In aviation, where electrification falls short, SAF offers a powerful path towards sustainable aviation. By combining carbon from waste and biogenic sources with green hydrogen, Braathens Renavia is developing one of the most cost-effective SAF concepts in Europe.
“Our ambition is to make a lasting impact where it matters most, and aviation is among the toughest sectors to decarbonize. Hydrogen-based SAF is one of the most promising frontiers for climate action in aviation. We’re investing to accelerate that future,” says Michel Thomas, CEO of Qarlbo Energy.
Braathens Renavia is currently advancing two large-scale projects through feasibility stages, securing land, industrial partnerships, and environmental permits. Once operational, a single facility could produce 100,000 tons of SAF annually -enough to fully replace all fossil jet fuel used in Sweden’s domestic flights.
“The aviation sector faces a decisive decade. If we want passengers to return – and ensure aviation has a future – we must invest in new sustainable technologies,” says Per G. Braathen, founder of Braathens Renavia.
