Pophouse and BMG have completed a strategic transaction that makes Pophouse the majority owner in the music interests of the catalogue of multi-award-winning singer-songwriter Tina Turner, as well as in the Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) rights.
The deal gives Pophouse ownership alongside BMG in the music interests of the catalogue of Turner, widely known as the “Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll”.
Twice inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Tina Turner (26 November 1939 – 24 May 2023) won 12 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, and is one of the top-selling female artists of all time. Her body of work includes hits such as ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It’ and ‘The Best’, and her cultural legacy remains a testament to her influence and resilience.
A touring artist for more than 50 years, Turner broke down barriers throughout her career. In 1967, she became the first Black artist and first woman to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine. In 1988, during her Break Every Rule World Tour, she performed to a record-breaking crowd at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã Stadium, then the largest concert ever by a single artist for a paying audience.
BMG has played an important role, together with the Tina Turner Estate, in protecting and developing Tina Turner’s legacy since the initial acquisition and will remain closely involved in that work going forward.
Pophouse said it will work alongside BMG and the Tina Turner Estate on long-term stewardship of Turner’s legacy, while contributing creative ideas intended to respect and celebrate her artistry and further elevate her work among existing fans and new audiences.
Pophouse CEO, Jessica Koravos, said: “I am thrilled to welcome Tina Turner’s iconic catalogue to the Pophouse family. We will now set in motion a series of creative projects to celebrate Tina Turner’s remarkable music and persona and secure her legacy as the Queen of Rock n’ Roll.”
Pophouse Managing Partner & Head of Investments, Johan Lagerlöf, said: “We are incredibly proud to be entrusted with helping celebrate and develop Tina Turner’s extraordinary legacy. Tina Turner is not only one of the greatest artists of all time, but a force of nature whose impact extends far beyond music. We look forward to developing new and exciting projects that respectfully carry her legacy forward for generations to come.”
BMG, President, UK, Continental Europe & APAC, Alistair Norbury, said: “Tina Turner’s voice and spirit shaped modern music and popular culture. Our responsibility, alongside Pophouse and the Estate, is to ensure her work continues to resonate with audiences around the world, while remaining true to the strength, independence and originality that defined her career.”
