Hydrogen-powered trucks can enable even heavy and long-distance transport to transition to fossil-free operations, while making more efficient use of the electricity grid’s limited capacity to electrify society. In a new report, Volvo Trucks Sverige and Qarlbo Energy present nine policy proposals for how Sweden can establish a well-functioning hydrogen market for road transport within just a few years.
In "Hydrogen on the Roads", Volvo Trucks Sweden and Qarlbo Energy outline the opportunities and advantages of hydrogen and present proposals for how the government can support the development. With the right investments, hydrogen could redraw the map towards zero-emission heavy-duty transport in just a few years.
Nine proposals to accelerate the decarbonisation of the heavy-duty transport sector:
1. A national hydrogen strategy for Sweden
2. Temporary operational support for refuelling stations
3. Continued investment support for refuelling stations
4. Investment support for vehicle manufacturers
5. Increased climate premiums for vehicle purchases
6. Requirements for zero-emission vehicles in public procurement
7. A higher reduction obligation including hydrogen and RFNBOs
8. Fair taxation of hydrogen
9. Updated regulations for hydrogen handling
Qarlbo Energy’s subsidiary Hydri is driving the rollout of hydrogen refuelling stations along major roads and in urban nodes in Sweden and inaugurated the first national hydrogen refuelling network for heavy transport this spring.
The report is available to download on Hydri’s homepage (in Swedish): Vätgas på vägarna – Nio förslag för att ställa om de tunga transporterna
